Lately, I’ve been working on my church’s website and app. We just launched a new mobile app through Subsplash and it has been great! But with the new ability to host our own sermons and display our events comes the need for some better graphics. So I’ve been trying to up my game a bit.
I used Excalidraw for a bit when I first started because it’s dead simple and great to work with. But it can be too simple for Event graphics or YouTube thumbnails. So I recently started using Canva and it’s been amazing! Plenty of templates and all the tools I need to do some pretty cool stuff.
I’m not on the artistic side, but I do love good design, web development, typography, etc. I actually have a minor in Web Development which required me to take some art and graphic design classes. Though they weren’t my highest grades, I’m excited to put some things into practice. I just have to dust the cobwebs off a bit.
Examples
Here are some examples of things I’ve made recently.
Matthew Sermon Series
Other Sermon Art
The above YouTube thumbnail is an experiment. I was listening to some streamers talk about which thumbnails get more interactions and they mentioned two key factors: Uniqueness and an actual human face. So basically you want your thumbnails to stand out and draw people’s attention instead of the same exact image that gets scrolled past without a thought. Also, people are relational and are drawn to other people. So seeing someone in the thumbnail, especially someone they like to listen to, attracts more people to the video.
Anyways, we’ll see how well this video performs over the next few weeks.

Logos
I have so many variations of these, but these are my favorite two.
Anyways…
I’ve been having fun with it. Maybe too much fun…. I’m open to suggestions and critiques from anyone who actually knows what they’re doing.
